The Doncaster Mile (formerly known as the Doncaster Handicap) is a Group 1 1600-metre race run at Randwick Racecourse as part of the Sydney Autumn Carnival. The 2023 Doncaster Mile will be run on Saturday 1st of April with total prize money of $4,000,000.
Doncaster Mile History & Famous Winners
First, run in 1866 as the Doncaster Handicap, the Doncaster Mile has a rich history and a long list of notable Doncaster Mile winners, including Sunline, Gunsynd, Super Impose (twice) and Winx. Legendary trainer Tommy Smith shares the record for the most wins with his daughter Gai Waterhouse with seven wins apiece, while Chris Waller has trained the winner six times this century. Both Waterhouse and Waller will likely saddle out some of the main chances again this year too! With six wins in the last 15 years, Glen Boss is the most successful Doncaster jockey of the modern era.
Doncaster Mile Form Guide
There are many crucial lead-up races for the Doncaster Mile, with trainers and connections looking to balance the need to qualify for the big race to keep their horses low in weight and the challenge of having their galloper peaking at the right time. It is a lot to consider!
Horses that win Group 1 races such as the Flight Stakes, The Ingham Stakes, Chipping Norton, Randwick Guineas, Canterbury Stakes, Coolmore Classic, and the George Ryder Stakes are all guaranteed automatic entry into the Doncaster Mile. Horses that win non-Group 1 races, the Ajax Stakes and the Doncaster Prelude, are also exempt from the ballot.
The George Ryder Stakes, run a fortnight earlier over 1500m, provides the best form reference, with 15 of the last 28 winners coming out of that race. The Handicap conditions of the race lead to a competitive finish with horses with lightweights dominating in recent years.

The lead-up to the 2023 Doncaster Mile has been intriguing. Two main chances, Alligator Blood (All-Star Mile) and Zaaki (injury) are not guaranteed to start, opening the door for some lesser-known runners.

He looks set for a big Autumn. The mare Icebath shook off her bridesmaid tag when she won the Group 1 Empire Rose Stakes last year during the Melbourne Spring Carnival. She has been unlucky in some big races in the past and will give an incredible sight down in the weights this year. She is one to keep in mind.
